PLAY BALL: Schuyler Park Opens

According to Northumberland councilman Dan Gale, it took about $1 million to build the sports fields with about $150,000 coming from the town school districts and the rest of the funds were donations.

"We've been really lucky so far with the overwhelming support from the community," Gale said. "Many companies have been very generous and kind along the way."

Friends of Schuyler Park was formed as a non-profit volunteer organization to hold fundraisers for the park. Other elements that helped keep costs down were donated items such as stonework and sod from Saratoga Sod Farm and volunteers who helped build the fields. Other major business sponsors are Stewart's Shops, Fort Miller Group, Brook Side Nursery, Swartout Construction and D.A. Collins Construction Co. Friends of Schuyler Park will also play a large role in the upkeep and maintenance of the park in the future.

"We want this project to affect taxpayers as little as possible and so far we've been successful," Gale said.

Aside from scheduled games on the fields, the park is open for public use from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be shorter hours in the wintertime but the park will remain open for tubing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
