Schuyler Park coming soon
The park has no finalized plans on what it will look like, but officials from the two towns and volunteers on the Schuyler Park Committee have begun thinking of where the fields, trails, picnic areas and parking will be.
The park could include two large soccer/football fields, softball fields, walking and hiking trails, playground areas, pavilions and an amphitheater. It would be 50 percent active recreation and 50 percent passive recreation.
Laurie Griffen, who is on the town of Saratoga Planning Board and co-chair of the Schuyler Park Committee, said it is exciting to see this park moving forward. She said the committee is still trying to see what all can fit in the park.
She said the plans have been thought out well and this project is something the residents of both towns realize is an important issue.
“I think people are excited to see this come to fruition,” Griffen said.
Supervisor Wood said the Old Saratoga Athletic Association will utilize the park’s fields, but Schuyler Park will cater to all ages.
He added the OSAA is split between the two towns in participants.
Bill Peck, supervisor of the town of Northumberland, said Schuyler Park is an outstanding project. He said the two towns have been working on the project the last couple years to remedy the lack of field space in both towns.
“There are so many kids involved in OSAA that they outgrew the field they use,” Peck said. “There isn’t enough room for all the games and kids.”
Peck said he would love to see some fields up and running with ample parking by the end of the summer.
“Our biggest challenge is to efficiently and effectively use all the property for the project,” Peck said.
The park will be located on Route 29, across from Farmer’s Daughters’ Ice Cream, at the Louden Road intersection.
Wood said the park will be less than a mile from the Northumberland town line.
“We have a long history of working together with Northumberland,” Wood said. “The park will be right in their backyard.”
Peck said he likes to think of the towns as borderless communities. He said half the kids in his town go to Schuylerville, so it is fitting to be working together. The Schuylerville School District is also on board, Peck said.
“I think this project is good for everybody,” he said. “And will be a shining star on how two municipalities can work together.”
While work to clean up the property has begun, Wood said it is still a multi-year venture. He hopes to begin construction of the fields and driveway by early summer.
A newsletter went out to residents of both towns to inform them of the project.
“We are always open to feedback from the residents,” Wood said.
He said the project would not be as successful without the work of volunteers from both towns.
He said Ian Murray has been very active, as well as Griffen and Dan Gale.
Officials, the Schuyler Park Committee and residents will continue to meet the last Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Town Hall, located at 35 Ferry St.
