PLAY BALL: Schuyler Park Opens

By Melissa Downer

The generosity of the businesses and residents of Saratoga, Northumberland and Schuylerville has finally brought the opening of the long-awaited Schuyler Park.

Softball games have been taking place all week at the park that has been in the works since 2007. While the master plan is not completely finished, opening the sporting fields this week was a milestone for the park and for the people who have worked for four years to see what was once an idea become a reality.

The 27 acres of land (located on Route 29 across from Farmer's Daughter Ice Cream) for Schuyler Park was donated by Saratoga Builders and currently contains a baseball field, a softball field and two multi-use fields that can host soccer, lacrosse and football games. Other plans for the park include restrooms, a concession stand, a gazebo, a playground and a basketball court; however, these projects are dependent upon funding so there is no specific timeline set.

Schuyler Park News

Officials from the Towns of Saratoga and Northumberland and volunteers on the Schuyler Park Committee are excited to share updated information on the creation of our new recreational park.

"The first phase of the park is right on schedule," comments Laurie Griffen, co-chair of the Schuyler Park Committee and member of the Town of Saratoga Planning Board. "After focusing on quite a bit of 'behind-the-scenes' work, we've started moving dirt and preparing the site."Volunteers offer donations of funds, goods and services "Many business people and individuals have volunteered time, services and funding for this intermunicipal project," Griffen says. "We're thrilled with the enthusiasm we're seeing and, of course, we welcome any help that our community wants to provide."

Business representatives and community members also asked that the Schuyler Park Committee establish a separate non-profit organization focused on fundraising. To this end, the Friends of Schuyler Park was formed. The 501c3 status of this organization means it can receive funds for the construction and maintenance of the park, while allowing businesses and other donors to receive tax breaks for their donations.

"This allows for another type of fundraising––one that's removed from taxpayers and municipalities. This group is separate from the Schuyler Park Committee, but is working in tandem with committee members for the benefit of the park," Griffen explained. "Any monetary donations to the Friends of Schuyler Park will be used to construct and maintain the park, along with the park and recreation funds set aside by both towns and the school district."
